Anatomy of a Modern .NET Content Platform: Microkernel, Plugins, Dynamic Routing

Microkernel plus plugins plus themes, with database-driven dynamic routing — how a CMS stays both stable and hackable.

Small kernel, lively plugins

Legacy CMSs weld every feature into one big program, where each change risks everything. The modern approach inverts this: the kernel keeps only multi-tenancy, routing and the plugin engine. Posts, comments, payments and SEO are all plugins — a site's capability list equals its installed plugins. Uninstall, and they vanish without dirty data.

URLs belong to content

Permalinks should never be hardcoded. DotnetCMS stores every URL in a routing table: rename a title or switch permalink structures and old addresses 301 to the new ones automatically. Each language version gets its own address. Search engines always see one clean, duplicate-free URL set.

Multi-tenancy is not multi-install

One platform, N sites: one codebase, one admin, each site with its own domain, theme, languages and content library. The platform collects rent (plans and quotas); sites just grow. That is exactly why Acme and Nordic run on the same platform.
